Welcome to First Grade! This is an exciting time of settling in to a school year filled with academic, social, and spiritual growth. This all takes place as a partnership in your child's education.

While the main emphasis of the year is in Reading and Math, Science, and Social Studies skills are also important. Phonics, Grammar, Handwriting, and Spelling all fall under the Reading program. Books in a Bag are used for enrichment in vocabulary building and the shear enjoyment of reading. The goal of the Books in a Bag is to meet the appropriate reading level for individual children. Later in the school year students who are ready begin the Reading Counts program which consists of taking comprehension tests over specific library books in the Computer Lab. Religion, Art, PE, Music, and Spanish classes also fill our days.

Homework in first Grade? Yes, but don't panic. By no means should it be a burden. Children at this age actually think homework is fun!

The every popular prize box is used as a reading incentive as well as a special treat for birthdays.

Parent volunteers are welcome. Library helpers and parents who listen to children show off their reading skills are greatly appreciated. Parents also sit with us during the weekly all school chapel services. Help is also welcomed for class parties and special activities or trips.

First grade celebrates fall with a Letter People Party the end of October. Children dress as their favorite letter. Examples are: Cotton Candy, Super Socks, Beautiful Butterfly, or even Delicious Donuts. We celebrate with songs and treats to match the letters.

Skills Development projects occur in the fall with the building of our Skills Neighborhood and the winter with building the Skills Snowmen. Here again parent participation is welcomed.
